Business Info - on starting a business

Picture
Starting a business -- especially a food business -- can be fun, exciting and rewarding. It's also a lot of work!

Be sure you get off to a good start:
  • Educate yourself and make good choices
  • Get professional advice
  • Keep good records right from the beginning

Below are some links and resources that you may find helpful.

Incorporation & Business Form
You should create a business form that provides some protection against personal liability.  The most common forms are corporations and LLC’s (limited liability corporations).  Be sure to educate yourself and/or consult an attorney!

Here is a link to the Colorado Secretary of State web site, where form can be filed to create a corporation or an LLC.

Tax Matters
You will have to file income taxes with the IRS and the Colorado Department of Revenue.  Depending on your business form, you may need a Federal Employers’ Identification (FEI) number.

Sales Tax Information
Register for a sales tax license in your city or town once you are ready to begin operations. Our advice is not to register for sales tax too far ahead of time, or you may have to file returns for period when you have no taxable revenue.

Here are links to some of the city government web sites; if you need others, Google "sales tax info" and the name of your town:

    City of Loveland
    City of Greeley
